How to Characterize Your Vocal Range

Many people love to sing, but when asked what part are unsure or pick the part that has the melody. There are several different vocal ranges. This article discusses how to determine which you might fit into.

Steps

The first thing you'll need is a piano or other instrument where you know what the notes are.

Find the pitch at which you speak and the pitch at which you laugh. These two pitches are good indications of where your voice is most comfortable.

Using a staccato (short) ha, move up and down the scale to find your highest and lowest note. Make note of where you feel the most comfortable and sing the best. Exaggerated sighing where your voice moves through pitches is also a good way to find how high and low your voice can go.

The notes you sing most easily and beautifully are called tessitura. Your working range are the notes where you can comfortablely sing beyond this. The extreme range of a voice is usually only accessible by professionals or those who have been trained.

The highest voice is a Coloratura. The tessitura is from B above middle C and up the scale to G above high C. Their working range extends from E above middle C to A above high C.

The next voice is called a Lyric Soprano. The tessitura for this voice is from A above middle C to F above high C. The working range is from D above middle C to G above high C.

Next we come to the Dramatic Soprano. The tessitura is from G above middle C to E above high C. Their working range extends from middle C up to F above high C.

Mezzo Soprano is next on the list. The tessitura is from E above middle C to high C. The working range is from B below middle C to E above high C.

Contraltos are the lowest of the treble voices. Their tessitura is middle C to A above middle C. Their working range is from G below middle C to high C.

The Lyric Tenor straddles the treble and base clefts. They can sing from A below middle C to F above middle C in the tessitura range. Working ranges are from D below middle C through A above middle C.

Dramatic Tenors come next. The tessitura is D below middle C up to D above middle C. Working range is low C to F above middle C.

Baritones have a tessitura from B below low C to G above low C and a working range of A below low C to D above middle C.

The next lowest voice is the Bass Baritone. The tessitura is from A below low C to F above low C. Working range encompases G below low C to middle C.

Finally we have the Bass. This voice has a tessitura from G below low C to E above low C. The working range is F below low C up to B below middle C.

Crochet Weave Washcloth

1 ball Sugar & Cream 100% Cotton yarn (makes more than one)
Crochet Hook Size H

Chain 32

In third chain from hook, double crochet. Continue across. (30 double crochet + chain 2 = 31 double crochet). Chain 2 and turn.

In first double crochet, front post double crochet. In next double crochet, back post double crochet. Continue across alternating front post/back post. Chain 2 and turn.

Back Post double crochet in first stitch. Front post double crochet in second stitch. Continue alternating back post/front post across. Chain 2 and turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have a square shape. (approx 14 more rows in total)

Edging: Half double crochet in each space between stitches across top. When you come to the end of the row make 3 half double crochets in the last space between stitches. Turn and continue on the side making 2 half double crochet stitches on each post. Make 3 half double crochets in the corner space. Continue across the bottom and other side as before. Slip stitch in top of first stitch, when you arrive back at the beginning of the edging. Tie off.

Mom is Wonderful

I was in FL last week on business. Mom drove me to the airport and picked me up again when I came back. The surprise was that while I was gone she did a little touch-up on my home. She washed my sink dishes and cleaned the sinks themselves. (I noticed the dishes quickly, but only noticed the sink too, like, yesterday!) She also cleaned my shower. I know because I noticed that, ok this is gross but, I noticed that some hair was missing that I was going to throw away when it dried. Then I checked under the shampoo bottles and found out that the tub was cleaned. Wow! That was really nice. She does a lot for me and I don't say thank you enough. I feel a little guilty that she does so much.

Baby Therapist

I got a call on Monday offering me a position at Axis Community Health as a trainee therapist for my practicum. It was hard to hold on to that. I thought several times during the day that maybe I was remembering the phone conversation wrong. (I prefer to have things in writing - makes it easier to see that they are real.) This was my first choice. It is less than a mile walk from my regular job's office. I will be working there two days a week. One of them will actually be at a school site, the other at the office. It's so amazing to think I will actually be seeing clients in September. A little scary too.

This whole experience has been one of faith. I studies my options and prayed and decided on what I would do and prayed again. I felt good about the site and it was the only one I applied to at first. I didn't have any worries and just accepted that I would be placed there. Then there were setbacks and uncertainties from the world at large. The site seemed unsure if they would have any openings at all and I began to panic. Had I really gotten a confirmation from God? What should I believe? I felt a pull between relying on God and fearing man. I wasn't sure what wisdom was - the world would tell me that I was stupid to apply just to one place and that I was naive. I even thought maybe I was arrogant or foolish. I broke down and half-heartedly sent out letters to two other locations (which I never heard back from).

Finally, I had my first interview. It went well. I brought smiles the the interviewer's faces and made them laugh. There were several points of connection - I knew two people who had worked there before and I am going to a conference that one of their supervisors is also excited about attending. Then I had to wait for a second interview. But I felt much better and calmer. Again I questioned whether it was faith, arrogance, or foolishness. My second interview was shorter. I was asked two questions and given an vignette to respond to. I felt like I did ok with that and sat down to wait. Then this week I got my placement.

I am so grateful to God for looking out for me and providing for my needs. I am glad of this experience to practice faith and learn about trusting the Lord. I hope I do better next time around in holding on in faith without letting the outside world engender doubt in my heart.

I found another game. This one involves creating a village, solving puzzles, and accomplishing tasks. You can get it from Grubby Games. You start off with 8 people and they have children which grow up. It's fun to watch them grow and see them building things. Here are some pictures.

This is my cast. You can only go up to 50 people so I don't have any children right now. The couples are color coded with bright colors. (You can change their clothes, hair color, and hair style.) And I named them in order of age alphabetically.

At work, they had a wrapping station with lots of paper, bows, and ribbons for us to use so I actually got a little fancy with my wrapping this year and used glittery ribbons and bells and stuff. It was fun and I wished I had more gifts to wrap.

What's your favorite Dr. Seuss book? Most people say "The Cat in the Hat." Mine is "To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street." I love the imagination run wild. Imagination has always been something I've valued. I'm considered creative. When I was little, less than 5, I once said that I wanted to grow up to be a Fire Engine. My family enjoys and supports creativity and my mother only encouraged these types of fancies. If you haven't read this book, check it out of the library.

Aside from hobbies, I collect aprons. This first one is from Solvang in honor of our Scandinavian heritage.

This one is from my sister. A Christmas gift last year that she made for me. I love the colors.

This one was made for me by my mom. It reminds me of making cookies because the pattern is gingerbread boys and girls. It's also nice and old fashioned.

This one I made just this year. It is my Petter Rabbit apron. We got the pattern at a quilt shop and thus the cute fabric. It even has buttons with a Beatrix Potter story pattern.

This one was my grandmothers. It has lots of lovely applique work and a pretty scalloped edge.

This one I bought on eBay. It has a combination of applique and needle work.

Finally, this one, also from eBay, has some nice lace to go with the applique. I love strawberries.

The funny thing is that I forget to wear them when cooking or baking and end up with flour all over me.

Carcassone

I love games. This one is nice because it mixes strategy with luck. It's also tactile because you have tiles to place. My favorite one of the Carcassone games (and I own a lot of extentions) is The City because it also builds walls and looks neat when it's done. You can play an online version of the game here against the computer or against other human players.

Another game I've been glued to lately is Travian. As far as animation goes, it's pretty static. It's more a numbers and strategy game. I got sucked in because I keep doing a spreadsheet to plan out what I'm going to build next. Plus it doesn't end quickly so I keep going because I want to finish. At the local Lucky store you can either buy flower bunches 3 for $12 or buy an arrangement for various amounts. A bundle of roses costs $12. I went for an arrangement as buying the individual bunches would have cost about the same, probably a little more and that would not come with a vase. Not only that, but Lucky will do an arrangement for you or freshen up one they already have. So here is what I got.

Slitherlinks

I'm addicted to slitherlinks. It's a logic puzzle that is a cross between a maze and a dot-to-dot. "The puzzle consists of a grid of dots, with some clue cells containing numbers. You connect horizontally or vertically adjacent dots to form a meandering path that forms a single loop or "Slitherlink." The loop must not have any branches and must not cross itself. The clue numbers indicate how many lines surround the cell. Empty cells may be surrounded by any number of lines (from 0 to 3). "

There are a lot of them here. I started out with the 7x7 and then the 10x10s. Now I'm working the 20x20 easy puzzles. (I can do the 7x7 and 10x10 pretty easily now.) With the 20x20 I start by using a colored pencil to mark all the lines I'm sure of at first glance and then come back with regular pencil to complete the rest. Sometimes I even color them in afterwards.
